Newly Surrendered Baby - A Heartbreaking Story |

|
It was late at night. We were taking an evening stroll outside the Mercy Home where we had spent the day working with the staff and babies, part of our ongoing efforts to raise the standards. We noticed an auto rickshaw approaching the Home and wondered who could be coming at such a late hour. The rickshaw came to a halt in front of the main entrance, and there in the back was a little family with four daughters, the fourth daughter, only a few hours old, cradled in her grandmother’s arms. They had come directly from the hospital to surrender their baby to our infant nursery. (See above picture)
As we waited for the social worker to arrive, (to handle the legal paperwork,) the father carried one of his daughters, sleeping on his shoulder, into the shadows, to hide his shame and sorrow. Our colleague spoke a few words to the mummy to inquire about their decision “We cannot get our daughters married - we have nothing to give,” was all she said. The social worker arrived, the baby was handed over. The father, with tears in his eyes explained, that if he did not hand over this baby, he would come home one day soon, and the baby’s grandparents would tell him she had “died”... The heart-wrenching plight of these poor people is something we will never forget. |
