A Review of Progress during 2010

Little Darlings Toddler Group

The 'Little Darlings' programmde was launched at the beginning of April 2010, to provide loving care and training for toddlers and preschoolers at the Mercy Home who have not or cannot be adopted. (See photos ») Here is a summary of what they have learned since April.

  • All of the older toddlers are now potty trained. (None were at the launch of the programme.)

  • Washing hands before eating.
  • We have noticed that the 3 year-olds love to help with the younger ones. For example they helped prepare for nap time (before their beds were finished) by putting pillows on their mats and then selecting a cuddle toy for each child.

They also have daily walks in the grounds and regular excursions.

Our biggest reward is to see that the toddlers are much happier, more outgoing and confident.

Progress of the SHE programme

The SHE programme has been running for a little over one year now, to fight female infantice and poor maternal health through grassroots assistance and education, to assist disadvantaged children, especially female and handicapped children, and to promote the value of the female. Here is a brief summary of progress during the past year, 2010.

Care for pregnant women and new mothers.
  • Enabling mothers obtain government benefits and medical treatment that is available to them.
  • Providing transport to bring mothers to the monthly mobile clinics organised by the government, and monitoring their treatment.
  • Monthly seminars for pregnant women on pregnancy, healthcare and hygiene.
  • Providing nutrition and vitamin supplements to hardship cases.
  • House visitation and counseling.

NUMBER OF BENEFIARIES = APPROXIMATELY 300.

Assistance to disadvantaged children.
  • Sponsoring school fees of three hardship cases.
  • Evening tuitions in 7 villages, providing a place for guided homework for a total of 870 students.
  • Activities and games organised for National Girl Child Day, End of Term, and Children's Day.
  • Summer camp for children of 3 villages providing useful acitivities and enabling children from different castes and communities to mingle and form friendships.
Assistance for physically challenged adults

SHE staff assisted physically challenged residents of local villages to obtain special government ID's and the benefits that come with them.

Self Help Group

SHE enabled the female residents of Azhgusirai to form a self-help group and start a savings scheme.

Training seminars in higher seconday schools and colleges.

We have started awareness programmes to educate students on human and female rights and relevent social issues.

Goals for the SHE programme for 2011:

  • Start construction of new SHE centre near Usilampatti.
  • Expand the above programmes to villages near the new Centre.
  • Open preschool for neglected physically challenged children in local villages.
  • Start evening tuitions in 4 more villages.
  • Start creche renewal programme in 3 villages. See details
  • Organise medical camps for children in a tribal village located close to the SHE property.This village is very needy and we will extend all our programmes to this village.
