To improve the well-being of mothers and children, and to fight female infanticide

Lex and coworkers helped launch the SHE program, in partnership with the Claretian Educational and Social Services Society. The goal of the program is to improve the health of pregnant and nursing mothers, and as a result, improve the health and birth-weight of new born babies. In addition, we conduct programs to improve the well-being of women and children, starting in villages in the vicinity of the Mercy Home in Madurai district. Through all these programs, we are endeavoring to change the mentality towards female babies and children, to promote the worth and status of females in the villages, and to prevent the practice of female infanticide. So far we are conducting the following initiatives:
  • Registering of female births and deaths in villages adjacent to the Mercy Home.
  • Registering and keeping detailed medical records of ANC and PNC mothers.
  • Assisting mothers obtain government benefits available for them.
  • Assisting mothers obtain medical check ups.
  • Report to government any unnatural deaths.
  • Monthly seminars for pregnant women on pregnancy, healthcare and hygiene.
  • Providing nutrition and vitamin supplements to hardship cases.
  • House visitation and counseling.
  • Assisting physically challenged residents of local villages obtain special government ID cards which will entitle them to special benefits.
  • Monthly awareness programs for teenage village girls
  • Educational activities in three village nursery schools.

RPI is currently constructing a building to be used as a preschool for handicapped village children, and a multi-purpose educational centre for the above activities:
